In 2020, the scope of the previous subsidy scheme, SDE+, was broadened from renewable energy production to other CO2 emission reduction measures such as CCS within the SDE ++ scheme.

The SDE++ is a subsidy scheme targeting technologies related to low carbon power and CO2 sequestration. Only industries, companies and non profit organisations can apply to the programme.

There are five main categories for this scheme:

1. Renewable electricity (Hydropower, wind, solar...)

2. Renewable heat (solar thermal, geothermal, biomass combustion…)

3. Renewable gas (biomass fermentation or gasification)

4. Low CO2 heat (electric boiler, industrial heat pump…)

5. Low CO2 production (CCUS, hydrogen…)

The grant is distributed over the span of up to 12 to 15 years, depending on the technology. The funding allocated is computed according to the amount of energy the firm produces or the amount of avoided emissions related to the technology.

In 2020 and 2021, EUR 5 billion grants were available through this programme.

In the 2020 round, the CCUS project in the Port of Amsterdam will contribute to sequester 2.5 million tons of CO2 per year, through a EUR 2.1 billion investment. EUR 2 billion were distributed to solar and wind projects with the rest towards energy efficiency in industry.

China's New Five-Year Plan Preps the Nation for Peak Oil

China's energy strategy has largely shielded it from the fallout of the war in Iran and the resultant closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global oil and gas trade. However, the country's newest five-year plan for its oil and gas sector reveals ongoing anxieties about geopolitical tensions, future conflicts, reliance on energy imports, and the country's dwindling crude supplies. Released to the public on Monday by the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration, the newest five-year plan focuses…

The Race to Unlock the World’s Hidden Hydrogen Reserves

Countries around the globe are racing to become the world’s first geologic hydrogen hotspot. A few years ago, the United States Department of Energy released a bombshell report that estimated that there are trillions of metric tons of natural hydrogen deposits sitting in underground pockets around the world – and that a considerable amount of that could be extracted for industrial use. Energy companies around the world have been eagerly exploring for the most ideal locations to put that theory to the test – and they’re zeroing…

Low Rivers, High Stakes: Europe's Nuclear Cooling Crisis

The extreme heat experienced across Europe in recent weeks has caused widespread disruption to nuclear power plants. Governments across the region have been forced to take extraordinary measures to keep nuclear facilities operating, but some are failing to meet their goals, with river levels at record lows. This is expected to have a significant impact on Europe’s GDP, with economic losses in the billions. Europe has endured five heatwaves so far this summer, bringing record temperatures, prolonged drought, and wildfires, with many…

Iraq Wants to Double Oil Output—and Needs OPEC to Get Out of the Way

Iraq wants to more than double its oil production within six years. First, it needs OPEC to let it. Baghdad is targeting output of between 8 million and 10 million barrels per day, up from roughly 4 million bpd before the Iran war, Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi said Friday. Iraq dispatched its oil and finance ministers to Saudi Arabia the same day to make the case for a higher OPEC production quota. OPEC+ has hired DeGolyer and MacNaughton to independently assess the maximum sustainable production capacity of most members, including Iraq. The consultancy…
